Can we legally marry in Phuket?

Ceremony or registration: what makes it legal?
Only registration at a district office makes you legally married in Thailand. Without it, you’re not legally married in Thailand, and Australia doesn’t recognise the marriage either (Australian Consulate-General Phuket, Mar 2026). Your resort or beach ceremony can be any style you like; it’s the registration that counts.
How does registration work for Australians?
- Certificate of No Impediment: both apply in person at the Australian Embassy in Bangkok or the Consulate-General in Phuket. It’s ready the next working day and Thai authorities accept it for 3 months. Australian state single-status certificates aren’t accepted.
- Translation into Thai by a translation agency.
- Legalisation at a Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs office; there’s one in Phuket (Central Phuket Festival).
- Registration at any district office (Amphoe).

What about UK and US couples?
- UK: a marital status affirmation from the British Embassy in Bangkok (£50 plus £25 for a certified passport copy), then translation, legalisation and registration in the province named on the affirmation (gov.uk, updated 6 Nov 2025).
- US: an affidavit sworn in person at the U.S. Embassy in Bangkok, then the same Thai steps.
Can same-sex couples marry in Thailand?
Yes. Thailand’s Marriage Equality Act took effect on 22 January 2025, and foreign couples can register at a district office with their passports and proof they’re free to marry (gov.uk; Thai Government PR Department, Jan 2025). Check with your embassy how it issues documents for same-sex couples.
Is it recognised at home?
Australia recognises a marriage that was valid where it took place, with no need to register it again (Australian Consulate-General Phuket). UK and US couples: check your government’s guidance.
Frequently asked questions
Can we just have the ceremony in Phuket and marry legally at home?
Yes, and many couples do: sign in Australia before or after the trip and keep the Phuket ceremony as your wedding day.
Is a Thai Buddhist blessing legal?
No. A monk blessing or water-pouring ceremony is a beautiful tradition, but only registration is legal.
