Going to a wedding in Santorini: what do guests need to know?
On this page
How do we get there?
- By air: Santorini airport (JTR) has direct flights from many European cities in season, and year-round flights from Athens.
- By ferry: from Athens (Piraeus or Rafina), by fast or slower ferry.
- From Australia or the US: fly to Athens, then a short flight or ferry.
Where should guests stay?
- Oia, Imerovigli, Firostefani: caldera views, the highest prices.
- Fira: central, a wide range of hotels, easy taxis.
- Kamari and Perissa: beach towns, the lowest prices, 20–30 minutes from the caldera.
Book early for May–October.
What extra costs should guests expect?
- Accommodation fee: Greece charges a per-night fee on accommodation, set by hotel category and higher from April to October. Hotels add it to the bill. (Keep Talking Greece, 2024)
- Entry: UK, US and Australian visitors don’t need a visa for short stays. The EU’s ETIAS travel authorisation is due to start; check the official EU site before you book.
- Getting around on the night: taxis are limited at peak times; couples often book transfers for guests.
What should guests wear?
- Shoes: flats or block heels; caldera paths have steps and cobbles.
- Layers: evenings on the cliffs can be windy, especially in July and August.
- Sun: hats and sunscreen for afternoon ceremonies.
